Art Berlin, the city’s leading contemporary art fair taking place during Berlin Art Week, has been canceled. Previously known as Art Berlin Contemporary (abc), the fair was bought up by the trade show organizer Koelnmesse in 2017; the company runs around 80 trade exhibitions yearly, including Art Cologne (the world’s oldest art fair for modern and contemporary art).

Art Berlin’s third edition in 2019, took place at the inoperative Tempelhof airport and had about 110 galleries participating. Koelnmesse said in a statement that the use of the Tempelhof site was not assured from 2020 onward. Another factor behind the decision to close down the fair seems to be the financial results of previous editions, which have been “unsatisfactory for Koelnmesse.” The company announced it will concentrate on it’s Cologne fair, running from April 23 to April 26, 2020.

Berlin Art Week in September 2020 will proceed as scheduled according to its website.
